Week 1 of the ETFL in the books.

Well, the first week of play for the Estevan Touch Football League is in the books. My team, Apex played its first game, against the Tower Wolves. The final score was 34-28 for the wolves. The result was quite good given the ability on the Wolves’ team, and the limited amount of preparation on our part. Before the game I heard two of our players say that they’ve never played organized football, but during the game showed a great deal of skill.

My number was rarely called on offense, but when the ball was thrown to me I made a 20 yard gain for the first down to about the Wolves’ 20 yard line. We would later score to make the score 28-20 for the Wolves. My only defensive play came in our own end zone during a two point convert where I deflected a pass to negate the two-point convert. I managed to kick-off the ball three times, twice into the wind, where the wolves subsequently started on about their 25 all three times. So, after all was said-and-done the turn-out of the game was quite good, despite the loss.

Our team found success by going with a two quarterback system and using a lot of play action and run plays, perhaps the Riders could try the same?? The only real downer to the game was the fact that during the game we listened to the Winnipeg/Rider game. The Riders also came up short, losing to the Blue Bombers 23-27. The Rider loss was more of a let down than our own loss. Oh well, as Mitchell Blair of News Talk 980 says, “You can’t win them all.” How true, first we lose then the Riders, better luck next time.

Thanks for Reading!
