With this warm weather coming up I can't help but get excited about CFL training camp, in particular the Riders training camp. And so far Tillman hasn't made any really big moves this off season, at least compared to the move that Shivers made last year. Does this mean that the moves that Tillman has made are that much more insignificant?? I say not at all. In fact the Riders have made some very key acquisitions this off season, perhaps they were to address an inflated payroll, and perhaps it was to infuse some youth onto the team...who knows. Names like Thyron Anderson, Jamie Boreham, and D.J. Flick may not be the biggest name free-agents out there, but they will challenge for starting spots and push key players like Jason Armstead and Luca Congi, players who underachieved somewhat last season.
Names like Wayne Smith, Mike Abou-Mechrek and Jermaine Haley will probably be shooting for starting positions rather than pushing starters. Wayne Smith and Jermaine Haley are the two to watch for this training camp. Smith, who is young yet talented, is expected to bring some youth and vibrancy to an aging Rider Oline. Haley is coming in on the heals of Davis’ controversial departure and Tillman is expecting him to make some noise in training camp…that remains to be seen.
At any rate this years’ training camp will be an interesting one. In the past, rider fans have been calling for the heads of some veterans, this year will be different, because the face of the team is different with much fewer veterans returning to training camp. With players like Nate Davis, Kenton Keith, Jamal Richardson, Omarr Morgan, Davin Bush, Andrew Greene, Jackie Mitchell, and Rocky Butler all gone there will be some large holes to fill. There will be a dog fight at training camp this year to take over those vacant spots, which will finally be a refreshing sight to see at a training camp….accountability.
That’s all I have for today!
