Luca Congi and Andy Fantuz were the big players in the 23-20 overtime comeback win against the BC Lions. Andy Fantuz had the Roughriders’ only two TD’s, the first coming late in the fourth recovering Joseph’s fumble in the end zone. The other was a pass from Joseph in overtime. Congi scored two field goals (53, 51) and two singles off long punts. So Fantuz can be credited for 12 of the points while Congi can be credited for 9, the other two coming off a safety conceded by Paul McCallum. The two (Fantuz & Congi) are both roommates and together will savor the victory. They are also the result of some fine scouting by former GM Roy Shivers.
I was able to make it to the game with my wife and six year-old daughter. It was my daughter’s first game, and needless to say, she had a great time. We stayed right until the end and stood and cheered for the final 5 minutes of regulation and the entirety of OT. Boy what a finish! I was supposed to take my 13 year-old son, but he figured it was going to be a boring game, so I offered up the ticket to my brother-in-law, he was quite thankful, to say the least. You’re welcome Ryan!
My wife invited her boss and her family to the game, it was her boss’s first game in nearly 11 years, and the first for her kids. After the game she said that they really need to do this again soon sometime. I agree!
Players of note that played well were: rookie linebacker replacing the injured Mike McCullough, Maurice Lloyd, Rookie Slotback Andy Fantuz, Rookie kicker Luca Congi and Fred Perry. The coverage was unbelievable in the second half for the Riders, so hat’s off to the Riders’ secondary as well.
I’m really looking forward to Saturday’s game against Edmonton, this will be a great chance for the Riders to develop some game-to-game momentum going late into the season. My prediction is that the Riders will get vindication for their loss in Edmonton earlier this year, the park should be packed so the 13th man should play a big role in Edmonton’s 10th loss of the year.
My prediction for game #14 vs. Edmonton is:
Riders: 28
Eskimos: 12
